I use a conversational approach to essay coaching, meaning I ask a lot of questions! Your answers to my questions, and your subsequent answers to my follow-up questions, are what clarifies your intention and your artistic voice. In short, the point of essay coaching is to engage you in dialogue while you write, which makes your writing unique, effective, and all-around awesome.
I will guide you through any piece of the writing process. This includes but is not limited to:
Choosing a prompt
Identifying a writing topic
Writing a first draft
Discovering your writing voice
Creating a compelling "hook"
Elevating your writing through revision
Editing syntax and grammar to best articulate your ideas
Getting through "writer's block"
Knowing when you're ready to hit submit!
Though every session differs largely from person-to-person based on individual needs, a typical coaching session is about an hour-long conversation between you (the student), and myself. I ask you thoughtful, provocative questions about your writing and we talk the answers out together. I take detailed notes during our conversation so you can articulate your thoughts out loud. I'll be there always to discuss content, answer questions, ask questions, and guide you toward a high-caliber essay that elevates your writing voice.
At the end of each session, you will walk away with a clarified understanding of what you're writing about, new, specific goals for the revision process, and a document with notes on what you've said during our session (in your own words!), so you can pull directly from our conversation when you sit down to revise.
Anything and everything that involves writing. This includes your personal essay, any and all supplemental essays (eg: "Why this college?"), Additional Information sections, even the Activities section of the Common App! We'll make every word on your application add up to a coherent narrative about you.
